Thank you for this interesting and fascinating journey in the life of Hans Christian Andersen. Although he endured many disappointments in life, he certainly persevered in accomplishing his love of poetry and theatre. I was surprised with all the meetings with royalty during his life's journey.

True Story of My Life Christian Hans Mary Mary Botham Howitt 9781444435573 Books Reviews

It was okay and informational but I would have liked it better if it had been more in a story format with dialogue. Just my opinion...
From a childhood of poverty, this author gives praise to God for his talent and opportunities that bring him joy and success.
I am used to reading antiquated language, but I think this would be a challenge for many.
Ah Hans
This autobiography by the author gives allot of insight into were he stories come from, and what some of them at least are actually about. It is interesting to see how times have changed.
What inspired me to read this book was the old classic movie starring Danny Kay. Although I haven't watched it in many years I do remember how it made me feel at times overcome with joy as Kay was quite the character full of emotion, hope, and a passion for life that's rarely seen. Of course I grew up loving Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales and wit among them "The Ugly Duckling", "The Princess and the Pea", and The Emperor's New Clothes" were a few of my favorites.
Reading the biography of this highly gifted author gave me more of an insight of Andersen's deep love for the Bible, God, and how he desperately clung to his faith during his struggles to overcome a self perceived learning disability and how although sometimes a loner, with more of a grandiose imagination than most, was able to conquer his fears of rejection time and time again to become a legend in his own lifetime! By his writing I believe he was rather self-absorbed, yet, oh so humble as probably a consequence of being humiliated often in his younger years by his peers. Without giving too much away here, Andersen gives you a peek of what it was like in the 1800's aspiring to be a notable poet in Denmark and how with fate and his fierce dedication brought him more than he could ever dream of!
About the only thing this has in common with the Danny Kaye movie is that the real H.C. Andersen went to Copenhagen at a young age. I learned a lot about this author, about the people he knew, about what crafted his art, and about the many works he wrote that are not in the fairy tales collections. Looks like I have a lot more to read. I'm glad I read this book, and I believe you will want to read it too.
Thank you for this interesting and fascinating journey in the life of Hans Christian Andersen. Although he endured many disappointments in life, he certainly persevered in accomplishing his love of poetry and theatre. I was surprised with all the meetings with royalty during his life's journey.
